LightRod was created by the developers from AtomJump.com in 2009, as a generalised rewrite of Mobilemaps, and built for the world's most popular scripting language, PHP. Mobilemaps was the geographic search engine developed by the people behind the Mobilemaps Viewer, and today powers Thundre, and numerous publisher sites. It is owned by High Country Software Ltd. in the UK, and all source code is copyright High Country Software Ltd.

The Mobilemaps Viewer was released in 1997-98 and was the first world-wide 3D fractal-terrain map viewer on the web, released before Google Earth came into being.
